Likes And Dislikes

3). What was it about this class that you liked? What do you think needs improvement?

What I liked most about this class was its independence in the assignments. Unlike most class settings where there are very specific guidelines as to what we may write about this class kept it somewhat open-ended.

For instance, the weekly posts usually had one question where we got to choose a concept from the book and write about it. What this did was not only give me some freedom, but it also motivated me to read and find something that no one else talked about and make it interesting.

Plus, with this sort of freedom I noticed that multiple perspectives were given by my peers about topics I had read but had not written about myself. This was a strategic way for us to get the book’s topics covered without each person having to write about each topic within the text.

Lastly, what I think needs improvement is not this class per se, but the financial state of the college. I would have liked to do the public speech assignment (I miss that butterfly-stomach feeling), but I understand why it was not possible due to budget cuts and furloughs. I have never been in an SJSU online class and would have liked to have met you, my brilliant peers. Honestly, there are some excellent writers in this group!

  1. Hello Hodgepodge!

Like you, I also liked the discussion questions and you brought up a good point when you stated that it motivated you to bring something different to the table and set yourself apart from anyone else. I always tried to get my posts in early so that instead of scrambling to write something different that the early birds, I could be the early bird! =). In addition, I also think that online classes are great because it really is dependent on your schedule and discipline for when you turn in your assignments. Unfortunately, procrastination tends to get the better of me and I sometimes take longer to turn in my assignments than I would like to. Well, I hope you have a great winter break and Happy Holidays!!!

  2. Hi HodgePodge,
I wish I could have met you too! But as I was saying in my post on the same subject, I almost feel like I got to know my classmates better in this class than in my actual class on campus because I interacted more with y'all than I ever do with my peers in my lecture class. Part of the reason for this is that each week we got to chose our own topic for one post and what people chose to talk about gives an insight into what they are like and what their interests are. This is my first semester where I took mainly all online classes and I think my work load was actually heavier than the semesters where I took all of my classes on campus. While the freedom of online classes are nice, they really are in no way easier! Lastly, AMEN to your last paragraph. Students suffering because the state and college system can't budget correctly = unfair. Happy Holidays!!
